We’re Loving Homegirl Café

We recently learned of Homegirl Café, a phenomenal social enterprise that targets those who are at-risk and/or formerly involved with gang life.  The men and women are trained to become contributing members of society through training in the restaurant service and culinary arts industries.

Homegirl Café offers a one year training program within the food and service industry, in order to empower young people and change their lives.

Rising Issue: Children In US Have Poor Heart Health

We got word of this unsettling article today from the Wall Street Journal.  A new study conducted by US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention examined US preteens and teens ages 12 to 19.  The study found that adolescents scored poorly overall based on seven criteria for cardiovascular health:

  • Diet – not one of the 5,450 children randomly selected from the group met the standards for diet
  • Body Mass Index
  • Smoking
  • Physical Activity
  • Total Cholesterol
  • Blood Pressure
  • Glucose

Overall, only around 16% of boys and 11% of girls met the ideal standards for the other 6 criteria.

Wondering what we can do about this larger issue…any thoughts?

Seaweed: The New Superfood?

Everywhere we turn lately, we’re seeing, smelling and hearing about seaweed and seaweed products. From seaweed salads to seaweed chips, the new trendy food also seems to have health benefits we never would’ve expected.

New studies show that seaweed’s health benefits range from weight loss to heart protection. Further research is being conducted to prove that certain types of seaweed can potentially help reduce blood clots and hardening of the arteries, both risk factors in heart disease.

For more information on the health benefits of seaweed read here.

What’s The Story With Potatoes?

Potatoes are making waves, again. This time, the US Department of Agriculture, the administer of the National School Lunch Program, proposed changes to nutritional standards including limiting the amount of starchy vegetables (including potatoes) to no more than 1 cup a week. These changes will go into effect this February.

It turns out that 75% of the vegetables kids are eating as part of their school lunches are starchy vegetables, and in most cases, french fries. Potatoes do provide some nutritional value as they are high in potassium, the USDA is hoping that children will learn to make room for other vegetables in their diets as well.
