Language Lesson: Cucumbers

The cucumber or cucumis sativus is a widery cultivated plant in the gourd family Cucurbitaceae. It is a creeping vine which bears cylindrical edible fruit when ripe. We wanted to take the day to give you a quick language lesson. Try saying “cucumber” in these different languages:

Spanish - pepino

German – gurke

French – concombre

When you’ve mastered all of these words, try them out in the following recipes:

Spanish Cucumber Salad from About.com is a perfect dish for a warm day – light, tasty and refreshing!

Gurkensalat from AllRecipes.com is a traditional German favorite.

This French cucumber recipe from Food.com was a favorite of legendary chef Julia Child.

Celebrity Ambassador of the Month: Maria Liberati

As a former international supermodel, Maria Liberati never dreamed that she would go from being a fashion diva to a domestic diva. An Award Winning  cookbook author and Celebrity Chef -her passion with food began at the early age of 4, when she would accompany ‘nonno’ (grandfather) on his early morning Saturday trips to the Italian Market in Philadelphia to pick out all the fresh ingredients for the Sunday family meal.Today, Maria is considered one of the foremost experts on Italian Cuisine and culture, has been called the Italian ’Martha Stewart’.

Language Lesson: Arroz and Mi fan

Have you ever been so hungry that you could eat a thousand of something? Well the answer would be to eat rice! Today we’ll teach you two new ways to say rice:

Spanish:

Chinese:

Picky Eater Tips

No matter how hard you try, sometimes you will be presented with a pint-sized picky eater. Since it is imperative to get kids to develop healthy eating habits, try some of these tips adapted from VegKitchen.com.
  • Let them get their feet wet with new foods – by introducing them surrounded by old favorites.
  • Introduce new foods slowly – because children can sometimes get overwhelmed by large quantities of food. They may feel more successful if they can finish a small quantity of food provided, so keep portions small.
  • Avoid food rewards – as punishment and enticement will confuse the fact that you can establish and enforce rules.
  • Let your kids cook with you! – Handstand Kids are less picky because they get to help plan meals! The below recipe for Shredded Chicken Tostadas from the Handstand Kids Mexican Cookbook is a favorite recipe of all kids – and parents will love the additions of lettuce, tomatoes and beans!

Veggie Dips!

One thing that Handstand Kids and Handstand Parents can all agree on is the fact that anything that helps us eat raw veggies is awesome! In light of that fact, we’ve done a round up of some of our favorite dips that make eating veggies fun and tasty! See below for three sure fire crowd pleasers!

Kuki’s Cookbook has a dreamy, creamy veggie dip with only 5 ingredients!

This bright green Veggie Dip is made with broccoli, kale and basil and can be left as is or baked for even more deliciousness!

This White Bean Veggie Dip uses yummy Greek yogurt!

Language Lesson

Since your Handstand Kids are done with school for the summer, take this opportunity to get their intellectual juices flowing. We have a simple language lesson that shows you how to say the words for some common utensils in Spanish, Italian and Chinese.

Measuring Spoon

  • Spanish – Taza de Medir
  • Italian – Dosatrice
  • Chinese – Liang bei

Spatula

  • Spanish – Espatula
  • Italian – Spatola
  • Chinese – Gua chan

Bowls

  • Spanish – Cuenco (large – grande, medium – mediana, small – pequena)
  • Italian – Piatti Fondi (large – grande, medium – medio, small – piccolo)
  • Chinese – Wan (large – da, medium- jung, small – shiau)

Fork

  • Spanish – Tenedor
  • Italian – Forchetta
  • Chinese – Can cha

Plate

  • Spanish – Plato
  • Italian – Piatto
  • Chinese – Pan zi

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Handstand Kids are healthy kids and yours can be healthy too! Summer leaves you with so much time for fun projects, why not start growing your own veggies to use in Handstand Kids recipes? We’ve provided some tips below on how to grow veggies from existing veggies so planting is a snap. Watch your child’s love of science grow along with these little plants and you’ll continue their learning process into the summer!

Potatoes

Using seed potatoes slice into sections making sure that each has at least three “eyes” Pour lightly salted water into a dish with the potato pieces eye-side down. Place the dish in the sun and let it sit for a day or two, until you begin to notice the eyes growing sprouts.

Carrots

Cut 1 inch of the crown of the carrot. Place the carrot tops into a plate or saucer. Make sure the plate you take has big enough flat surface so that the carrot tops can be placed easily in it. Add soil, sand, pebbles and lukewarm water into the plate. Make sure that only the end of the carrot tops are dipped under the layer of water and soil. Place the carrot plate in a sunny part of the house.

Outdoor Meals

We’ve talked about getting outdoors and playing outside, but Handstand Kids just can’t stay out of the kitchen! The following recipes can be made and eaten outside – what an awesome day for your kids!

You can’t go wrong with Ants on a Log. The crispy celery in contrast to the smooth peanut butter is always a crowd pleaser but eating it outside sets the mood for a fun day of outdoor play! Kraftrecipes
